Results of the 2008 Annual Survey of Wholesale, Retail and Import and Export Trades, Restaurants and Hotels

     According to the results of the 2008 Annual Survey of Wholesale, Retail and Import and Export Trades, Restaurants and Hotels released today (November 30) by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD), total receipts (i.e. sales and other receipts) of the retail trade, wholesale trade, restaurants, import and export trade, and hotels and boarding houses increased by 10.3%, 9.1%, 6.9%, 6.5% and 6.3% respectively in 2008 as compared with 2007.  For all the above industries taken together, total receipts increased by 7.0% in 2008.

     In the retail trade, total receipts amounted to $307.8 billion in 2008.  Gross surplus, which equals total receipts less total operating expenditure, accounted for 7.4% of total receipts in 2008, lower than that of 7.8% in 2007.  Value added of the retail trade, which is a measure of its contribution to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product, increased by 7.9% over 2007 to $48.8 billion.

     In the wholesale trade, total receipts amounted to $203.1 billion in 2008.  Gross surplus accounted for 3.8% of total receipts in 2008, higher than that of 2.7% in 2007.  Value added increased by 16.7% over 2007 to $15.5 billion.

     In the restaurants industry, total receipts amounted to $93.5 billion in 2008.  Gross surplus accounted for 8.8% of total receipts in 2008, lower than that of 10.7% in 2007.  Value added increased by 3.8% over 2007 to $34.2 billion.

     In the import and export trade, total receipts amounted to $3,105.7 billion in 2008.  Gross surplus accounted for 7.5% of total receipts in 2008, lower than that of 7.7% in 2007.  Value added increased by 2.4% over 2007 to $347.9 billion.

     In the hotels and boarding houses industry, total receipts amounted to $28.1 billion in 2008.  Gross surplus accounted for 36.2% of total receipts in 2008, higher than that of 34.8% in 2007.  Value added increased by 5.8% over 2007 to $18.2 billion.

     The attached table compares selected principal statistics by major industry group between 2007 and 2008.

     The survey was conducted from February to October 2009.  More detailed survey results will be given in the "Report on 2008 Annual Survey of Wholesale, Retail and Import and Export Trades, Restaurants and Hotels".  Users can download this survey report (in PDF format) free of charge at the website of the C&SD (www.censtatd.gov.hk/products_and_services/products/publications/index.jsp) as from end December 2009.
