Broadcasting Authority meeting
******************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Broadcasting Authority:

At its meeting in November, the Broadcasting Authority approved the application by Power Star Limited for a non-domestic television programme service licence for the provision of subscription television service principally targeting viewers in Taiwan. The period of validity of the licence is 12 years, from November 28, 2009 to November 27, 2021 (both dates inclusive). There are now 19 non-domestic television programme service licensees in Hong Kong providing about 200 satellite television channels targeting viewers in the Asia Pacific region.

The BA also noted that in October 2009, the Commissioner for Television and Entertainment Licensing (CTEL) dealt with 84 cases (155 complaints) under her delegated authority, of which eight cases (14 complaints) were classified as minor breaches and 46 cases (98 complaints) were unsubstantiated. The remaining 30 cases (43 complaints) were held to be outside the ambit of the Broadcasting Authority Ordinance. The monthly complaints figures dealt with by CTEL since October 2008 are shown in Figure 1. A chart showing the respective natures of the unsubstantiated complaints in October 2009 is at Figure 2. Please visit the Broadcasting Authority website: www.hkba.hk for further information on the complaints.
