********************************************************

The Wong Tai Sin Square was officially opened today (November 29). The square, together with the adjourning Wong Tai Sin Temple Court and open space outside Lung Cheung Mall, became a full-packed area for people participating in the community carnival.

Apart from enjoying arts performances, people also joined the specially designed sports games which celebrated the hosting of the Hong Kong 2009 East Asian Games in Hong Kong.

Officiated at the opening ceremony of the carnival were the Director of Home Affairs, Mrs Pamela Tan; Deputy Director General of Kowloon Sub-office of the Liaison Office at the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, Mr Yu Ruwen; Chairman of the Wong Tai Sin District Arts Council, Mr Li Tak-hong; Chairman of the Wong Tai Sin District Council East Asian Games Working Group, Mr Kan Chi-ho; and District Officer (Wong Tai Sin), Mrs Teresa Wong.

Mrs Tan said the Government, community groups, performing groups, sports associations as well as the commercial sector joined hands to organise this large-scale carnival for residents. The carnival promoted diversified community arts and the East Asian Games at the same time.

A wide array of performances was presented at the carnival for public enjoyment. The event was started with a 90-minute Oriental Dances Gala performance staged by the Hong Kong Dance Federation, followed by performances by district organisations and performers, including singing, dancing, dramas, African drums, Wushu, Taekwondo and artistic cycling. Games booths with the theme of the Hong Kong 2009 East Asian Games were also set up. Some 40,000 people took part in these activities today.

Wong Tai Sin Square was a district minor works project under the Wong Tai Sin District Council. With a spacious central area suitable for holding large-scale events, the square will soon become a popular leisure and cultural location in the district.

"In Support to Hong Kong 2009 East Asian Games - Community Arts Day, Sports Carnival & Opening Ceremony of Wong Tai Sin Square" was jointly organised by the Wong Tai Sin District Council East Asian Games Working Group, Wong Tai Sin District Arts Council, Wong Tai Sin District Office, Leisure and Cultural Services Department, The Link Management Limited and Wong Tai Sin District Healthy and Safe City.
