Foundation stone laid for new Civil Aviation Department Headquarters (with video)

     The foundation stone was laid today (November 27) for the new Civil Aviation Department headquarters.

     Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Henry Tang, and Director-General of Civil Aviation, Mr Norman Lo, marked the occasion by unveiling the foundation stone.

     "The Government's $2 billion investment in this new headquarters project is both timely and significant for the development of aviation in Hong Kong," said Mr Tang at the ceremony, "It will enable us to maintain our role as the premier aviation hub in the region and the world.

     "The new headquarters will provide the space needed for the replacement of the existing air traffic control system, which allows us to meet our pledge of increasing the runway capacity gradually to 68 movements per hour by 2015".

     Also present at the ceremony were Secretary for Transport and Housing, Ms Eva Cheng; Under Secretary for Transport and Housing, Mr Yau Shing-mu; and Director of Architectural Services, Mrs Marigold Lau.

     The Government has committed $1,997 million in funding for the construction of the headquarters, which is expected to be completed at end 2012. The new headquarters will also house all functional divisions of the department. The design of the building incorporates sustainable, environmentally friendly and educational themes. A one-stop shop and quality services will be provided for the industry and the public.
