The following is issued on behalf of the Committee on the Promotion of Civic Education:

As 2010 will mark the 20th anniversary of the promulgation of the Basic Law, the Committee on the Promotion of Civic Education (CPCE) and the Home Affairs Bureau (HAB) have jointly organised a Basic Law lyric writing contest to deepen participants' understanding of the Basic Law.

The contest is now open for applications. The deadline for submission of entries is January 29, 2010. Three workshops will be organised next month (December) and January 2010 when guest speakers will be invited to share with the participants their views on the Basic Law and some useful hints on writing lyrics.  For more information, please visit the event website (www.basiclawcontest10.hk).

Since 2004, the CPCE and HAB have been organising territory-wide events to promote the Basic Law. The contest this year is co-organised with the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau (CMAB), Education Bureau and Department of Justice.

The launch ceremony of the contest will be held at 3pm tomorrow (November 28) at Chater Garden in Central. The Convenor of the Basic Law Promotion Working Group of the CPCE, Mr Poon Chun-yuen, representatives from HAB and CMAB and Event Ambassador Ekin Cheng will be the officiating guests. Basic Law exhibitions and game stalls will be held from 10am to 3pm.

Application forms of the contest can be obtained from the Civic Education Resource Centre (7/F, Youth Square, 238 Chai Wan Road) and Public Enquiry Service Centres in 18 districts. They can also be downloaded from the event website (www.basiclawcontest10.hk).
