20 illegal workers and employers arrested in Joint Departmental Anti-illegal Worker Operation

     Immigration Department, together with Hong Kong Police and Labour Department, mounted an anti-illegal worker operation today (November 18) in the West Kowloon district to combat the illegal employment activities.

     The operation commenced at 8am and ended at 8.30pm on the same day. The operation resulted in the arrest of 20 people, including 17 illegal workers and three employers. During the operation, 62 workplaces were raided in Tung Choi Street, Temple Street, Tsim Sha Tsui and Yau Ma Tei districts, including restaurants, take away food shops, textile company, industrial buildings, and checked 50 persons' proof of identity.

     Among the 17 arrested illegal workers, six were non-ethnic Chinese illegal immigrants, eight were non-ethnic Chinese visitors and three were foreign domestic helpers. Among the non-ethnic Chinese arrestees, 14 of them were holders of recognizance forms.

     "The Immigration Department will continue its efforts to combat immigration offenders and prosecute employers who hire illegal workers," the spokesman stressed.
