********************************************************

The Secretary for the Environment, Mr Edward Yau, started his itinerary in Israel today (November 16, Israeli time) to see how Hong Kong can learn from the Israeli experience of employing advanced technology in sewage treatment.

He visited various leading Israeli companies in the fields of environmental and water technologies. Among them, he visited Shafdan, the Dan region sewage treatment facility, where a new system was in the pipeline under which sewage sludge would be converted into organic fertiliser after treatment to benefit Israeli agriculture.

He also visited Aqwise, a water technology company, to learn about its experience of developing and implementing innovative solutions for industrial and municipal wastewater.

In the afternoon, Mr Yau called on Chinese Ambassador to Israel, Mr Zhao Jun, and met Dr Yossi Beilin, former Israeli Minister of Justice.

Attending a dinner hosted by the Israel-Asia Chamber of Commerce, Mr Yau will give an account of Hong Kong's latest environmental policies and initiatives.
