Following is the transcript of remarks by the Secretary for Transport and Housing, Ms Eva Cheng, today (November 10) at a stand-up session after meeting with franchised bus companies on measures to enhance bus safety (English portion):
We had the key operators coming today and we discussed with them to diligently, steadfastly enforce the existing monitoring system they have on the safe driving of the bus services. We also asked them to enhance the awareness of their employees on the consequences of this monitoring system, in terms of discipline and other penalties. We requested and they agreed that they would enhance the enforcement, particularly for the night-time shifts and routes involving certain higher speed sections. There is an existing mechanism to trigger a review if there's a need to review certain routes which the trip times are probably not appropriate, for example, because of changing road conditions. Either the driver or the supervisors, as well as the company and the Transport Department, can work together and trigger that review if necessary.
