The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mr Henry Tang, began his four-day visit in London today (November 2 London time) by meeting Shadow Business Secretary Kenneth Clarke, along with Shadow Minister for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs David Lidington. He updated them on the latest developments in Hong Kong, including the economic situation and the progress of the West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD) project. The two sides also reviewed the special relationship between the UK and Hong Kong. They also discussed Hong Kong's unique position in serving as the springboard for UK companies to do business in the Mainland of China.
Mr Tang was then guest of honour at a lunch hosted by Sir David Tang, attended by key figures from the London arts and culture scene, during which there was extensive discussion about the WKCD project.
"I am very encouraged by the keen interest of the arts and culture leaders here in the WKCD project. They see tremendous prospects and great potential for closer cultural cooperation between the various UK arts institutions and WKCD. I am grateful to them for the useful and constructive advice on ways to develop top-notch arts hardware and software," said Mr Tang.
Finally Mr Tang celebrated the European premiere of Hong Kong movie Claustrophobia in London. The gala screening of screenwriter/director Ivy Hoˇ¦s film launches a UK-wide touring film festival, entitled Visible Secrets: Hong Kongˇ¦s Women Filmmakers.
The film festival will screen over 20 films with a focus on award-winning director Ann Hui as well as introducing new directors including Yan Yan Mak, Barbara Wong, Aubrey Lam and Tsang Tsui Shan. Over 180 guests attended the launch reception including renowned English film director Richard Curtis. The Visible Secrets project is supported by the London Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office.
Tomorrow, Mr Tang will visit key arts and cultural sites in London, and speak at the annual Hong Kong Trade Development Council dinner.
