Fatal case of human swine influenza at Queen Elizabeth Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     A spokesperson of Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) made the following announcement regarding the death of a human swine influenza (HSI) patient today (November 2):

     A 55-year-old male patient with high risk factors in health, developed flu symptoms and attended the Accident and Emergency Department of QEH on October 7.  He was admitted for clinical treatment and was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics. Positive result of HSI was confirmed on the same day.  His condition became critical on October 8 and he was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit and required ventilation support.  The patient passed away today (November 2) at 1.56pm.  The hospital would like to express condolences to the patient's family.

     The case has been reported to Hospital Authority Head Office and Centre for Health Protection.
