The following is issued on behalf of the Hong Kong Monetary Authority:
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) is pleased to announce a "Ying-san Note" Chinese Couplet Competition to promote the use of "ying-san notes", or good-as-new notes, as lai-see. "Ying-san note" is a name with auspicious meaning created by a primary six student - it literally means "notes to welcome the new" and it rhymes with "notes that are still new" in Cantonese.
The HKMA supports the use of "ying-san notes" as lai-see to help protect the environment. After organising a note-naming competition for primary schools and a cartoon competition for secondary schools in the recent years, a Senior Citizens Category has been included in this year's competition to allow people aged 60 or older to participate. The Chinese Couplet Competition is therefore divided into three categories: a Secondary School Category, a Senior Citizens Category and an Open Category. There is no limit on the number of characters used in each couplet so long as it helps promote the use of "ying-san notes". The deadline for submissions is November 30, 2009. Details of the competition and the application form can be found on the HKMA website (www.hkma.gov.hk).
