Under the auspices of Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, New York, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra (the Orchestra) debuted today (October 30, New York Time) at Carnegie Hall, one of the most prestigious concert stages in the world. Hong Kong Commissioner for Trade and Economic Affairs, USA, Mr Donald Tong, hosted a reception in honor of the Orchestra on the occasion.
The concert is part of a 21-day "Ancient Paths, Modern Voices" Chinese culture festival presented by Carnegie Hall. Of the more than 30 events in the festival, Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra is the only Hong Kong group featured.
Welcoming the Orchestra and guests, Mr Tong said, "Ancient Paths, Modern Voices pays tribute to China's diverse and vibrant culture and its influence around the world.
"We are very glad to see the participation of our Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra in this 21-day programme which pulls together the finest selection of rich musical performances by world renowned Chinese musicians and artistes." Mr Tong noted that the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra had inherited the "uniqueness of the Hong Kong culture, bestowed upon us by our colorful history" and acknowledged the orchestra as Hong Kong's "Cultural Ambassador". The Orchestra has performed over the years in numerous countries such as Australia, Austria, Canada, England, France, Germany, Japan, and the US, including New York in 2005.
Mr Tong said Hong Kong is exploring new grounds in developing into a cultural hub of the region. "Our Chief Executive just reaffirmed his commitment in developing Hong Kong as a cultural hub a few weeks ago in his Policy Address, when he specifically named the Cultural and Creative Industries as one of the six industries that are crucial to our development.
"On the hardware side, we have commissioned the development of a 100-acre West Kowloon Cultural District. Upon completion, the District will be home to world-class arts facilities, distinguished talents, iconic architectures and quality programs with a 'must-visit' appeal to the local people and tourists.
"On the software, the Hong Kong Government invests US$346 million annually to fund professional performing arts groups, arts education and scholarships, artists, and performance venues along with various audience-participation initiatives to strengthen the community's appreciation of arts and music.
"Not before long, Hong Kong audiences will have the privilege of enjoying the greatest performances in the world," said Mr. Tong.
During its stay in New York, Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra hosted two workshops respectively at Flushing Town Hall and University Settlement.
