Facelift for Central footbridge to tie in with East Asian Games (with photos)
**********************************************************

The footbridge from World-wide House in Central to Shun Tak Centre in Sheung Wan has been turned into an East Asian Games (EAG) community art gallery, featuring winning entries of the district EAG-themed drawing competition.

The drawing competition is part of the "Let's Dress Up Our Footbridges for the EAG" community beautification project, which is jointly presented by the Central and Western District Council, Central and Western District Office and the Co-ordinating Committee on the Promotion of Hong Kong 2009 EAG in the Central and Western District.

Officiating at this afternoon's unveiling ceremony were Deputy Director of Home Affairs, Mr David Leung; District Officer (Central and Western), Mrs Winnie Ho; Chairman of Central and Western District Council, Mr Chan Tak-chor; Chairman and Vice-chairman of Co-ordinating Committee on the Promotion of Hong Kong 2009 East Asian Games in the Central and Western District, Mr Stephen Chan and Mr David Yip; Chairman of Central and Western District Council's District Facilities Management Committee, Mr Sidney Lee; and District Leisure Manager (Central and Western) of Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Ms Yeung Yuet-ming.

On display on the footbridge are 80 winning entries of the EAG-themed drawing competition from nearly 20 schools and social welfare groups. The "painters", aged 6 to 76, expressed their good wishes to Hong Kong's hosting of the EAG.

The competition, held from June to September this year, attracted about 400 entries from different sectors of the community - elderly, women, teenagers, children, the disabled, the rehabilitated and the ethnic minorities. On one hand, the activity showed the creativity and cohesion of the community. On the other hand, it tied in with the theme of "Cultural EAG" and promotion of local culture.

Columns on the section of the footbridge are decorated with EAG mascots and patterns, carrying the official EAG slogan "Be the Legend" in both Chinese and English. The design of sea wave movement also resonates with the nearby Victoria Harbour seaview.
