The completion of the Cheung Chun San Tsuen and Kam Tsin Wai river improvement works, to widen, straighten and deepen the rivers, will greatly increase the flow capacities of the river channels in Cheung Chun San Tsuen and Kam Tsin Wai in Kam Tin, minimising the risks of flooding.
The remarks were made by the Director of Drainage Services, Mr Lau Ka Keung, at the completion ceremony cum planting day for the Cheung Chun San Tsuen and Kam Tsin Wai river improvement works held today (October 24).
The works are part of a series of river works in Yuen Long and Kam Tin, which comprises improvement to 13 rivers, at a total cost of $600 million. More than 90% of the works have now been completed.
Mr Lau said that besides addressing flood protection needs, the Drainage Services Department had also invested a lot of effort in protecting and enhancing the environment. In the river works just completed, the department has incorporated various elements, such as the use of gabion walls and purpose-made recess blocks, to enhance the rivers' ecology. Apart from that, more than 600 trees will be planted along the improved rivers in Cheung Chun San Tsuen and Kam Tsin Wai, providing the community with a lively and green environment.
Mr Lau thanked the Yuen Long District Council, the Kam Tin and Pat Heung Rural Committees, Village Representatives and the local people for their support of the works.
Participating in today's events were Chairman of Yuen Long District Council, Mr Leung Che-cheung, Chairman of Kam Tin Rural Committee, Mr Tang Ho-nin, Chairman of Pat Heung Rural Committee, Mr Tsang Hin-keung, District Officer (Yuen Long), Mr Yeung Tak-keung, Principal of Kam Tin Mung Yeung Public School, Ms Yeung Kam-ying, and more than 30 students and teachers from the school.
