October 2009 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics is now available

     The Census and Statistics Department (C&SD) published today (October 21) the October 2009 issue of the Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics (HKMDS).     

     In this issue, three feature articles entitled "Air Cargo Statistics", "Business Receipts Indices for Service Industries" and "Drug Abuse Situation in Hong Kong in 2008" are included.

"Air Cargo Statistics"

     The Hong Kong International Airport is one of the busiest and most advanced airports.  It consolidates Hong Kong's position as a hub of commerce and plays a very important role in the development of Hong Kong as a logistics centre.  In terms of international air cargo throughput, the Hong Kong International Airport continued to rank first among all airports in the world in 2008. This feature article provides a detailed analysis of the air cargo statistics of Hong Kong from 2003 to 2008.  In view of the global economic downturn since end 2008 and its implications on the air freight industry of Hong Kong, this feature article also briefly highlights the more recent performance of the industry by making reference to the quarterly air cargo statistics from the first quarter of 2008 to the second quarter of 2009.

"Business Receipts Indices for Service Industries"

     C&SD has been compiling the quarterly Business Receipts Indices (BRIs) of selected service industries since 1993 to gauge their short term business performance.  This feature article presents the methodology for compiling the BRIs and the performance of individual service industries in recent years as reflected by the movements of the BRIs.

"Drug Abuse Situation in Hong Kong in 2008"

     Drug problem in Hong Kong, in particular the rising trend of psychotropic substance abuse among young people in recent years, has aroused much public concern nowadays.  This feature article gives an overview of the latest situation and some of the changing trends of drug abuse in Hong Kong in recent years by making reference to statistics derived from the Central Registry of Drug Abuse.  It also depicts some salient features of youth drug abuse.  Moreover, drug-related enforcement statistics are presented to supplement the analysis of drug abuse situation, so as to give a wider perspective on drug abuse problem.

     Published in bilingual form, the HKMDS is a compact volume of official statistics containing 140 tables.  It collects up-to-date statistical series on various aspects of the social and economic situation of Hong Kong.  Topics include population and vital events; labour; external trade; industrial production; land, housing, building and construction; transport, communications and tourism; public accounts, money and finance; prices; commerce; social conditions; energy; and national income and Balance of Payments.  For selected key statistical items, over 20 charts depicting the annual trend in the past decade and quarterly or monthly trend in the recent two years are also available.
