The National Dance Company of Korea will be back in Hong Kong in November, performing "Korean Fantasy – Scent of Spring" with delicate and dynamic performances revealing the aesthetics of Korean dance.
"Korean Fantasy" is the representative traditional dance repertoire of the National Dance Company of Korea. It features a fan dance, two-drum dance, drum dance, duet and grand drum ensemble. Pina Bausch, the late director and choreographer of Tanztheater Wuppertal described the show as "a moving performance filled with delight and happiness".
The company will also perform excerpts from a dance drama, "The Scent of Spring", which is selected as a National Brand Performance by the company. It is based on "Chunhyangjeon", a famous Korean love story about a young couple from different social backgrounds. Among the excerpts, "Springtime" celebrates feminine beauty through the integrated movement of dancers who are washing their hair under a moonlit sky. The vivid choreography in "The Gisaeng Festival" is similar to a ballet. "The Words of a Scholar" is a new solo dance choreographed for the main character Lee Mong Liong. Other excerpts, including "Dance for Peace", "The Festival of Flowers", "Dance of the Minister", "The Scent of Woman" and "Love Story", demonstrate the diversity of Korean dance that audiences should not miss.
The National Dance Company of Korea was established in 1962. This leading professional troupe aims to cultivate traditional and folk dances and to introduce creative theatrical dance. With its unique style, the company has introduced the exquisite aesthetics of Korean dance to the world. It has participated in numerous major international occasions, including the Mexico Olympics in 1968, Munich Olympics in 1972, Los Angeles Olympics in 1984, Barcelona Olympics in 1992 and the 2002 World Cup in Korea.
Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, "Korean Fantasy – Scent of Spring" by the National Dance Company of Korea is one of the attractions of "Cultural EAG". The programme will be staged at 8pm on November 20 and 21 (Friday and Saturday) at the Auditorium, Kwai Tsing Theatre, and on November 22 (Sunday) at the Auditorium, Yuen Long Theatre. Tickets ranging from $100 to $220 are now available at URBTIX outlets. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients (limited tickets for stuents and CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis).
