In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will present the concert "Encore Series - Duo Recital by Yo-Yo Ma (Cello) & Kathryn Stott (Piano)" in November.
Twenty years ago, Mr Yo-Yo Ma performed in the opening programmes of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. This year, he returns with his long-time partner Ms Kathryn Stott, with whom he has performed and made recordings on many occasions to great acclaim. Their concert in Hong Kong in 2004 received overwhelming response.
The coming concert comprises a fascinating programme including "Toute Sweet" with Morricone's "The Mission", Gershwin's "Prelude No. 2", Mariano's "Cristal", Piazzolla's "Soledad", Fitkin's "L", Brahms' "Sonata No. 1 in E Minor" (Op. 38) and Franck's "Sonata in A for Violin and Piano" (Version for Cello and Piano).
Winner of 15 Grammy Awards, Mr Yo-Yo Ma is recognised worldwide as a top cello maestro. His next goal is the exploration of music as a means of communication, and as a vehicle for the migration of ideas, across a range of cultures throughout the world. Nine years ago, he established the Silk Road Project to promote the study of the cultural, artistic and intellectual traditions along the ancient trade route that stretched from the Mediterranean Sea to the Pacific Ocean.
Ms Stott is one of Britain's most versatile musicians. Her renown began after she was a prize winner at the Leeds International Piano Competition in 1978. She enjoys associations with many major orchestras and distinguished instrumentalists all over the world. Her special interest in contemporary music has led to several world premieres. She is a remarkable exponent of tango and other Latin dance music, reflected in her collaboration with Mr Yo-Yo Ma and leading South American musicians on the Grammy Award-winning Sony CD "Soul of the Tango" and its successor "Obrigado Brazil".
