***********************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the University Grants Committee:

The Chairman of the University Grants Committee (UGC), Mrs Laura M Cha, today (Oct 14) welcomed the Chief Executive's 2009/10 Policy Address which sets forth, among others, the Government's initiative to further develop Hong Kong's higher education sector.

Mrs Cha said, "It is the common goal of the Government, the UGC and the entire higher education sector to internationalise our institutions in order to rise to the challenges of globalisation.  The UGC will, as always, render full support to the institutions in their efforts to create a more international environment for the students. I am glad that the eight UGC-funded institutions will organise a seminar later this month to collectively reflect on this issue, and to share experience and exchange views with local as well as international experts in this area."

The UGC's work on the Higher Education Review 2010 is moving in full swing. UGC is studying the experience in other parts of the world, and has been collecting views and comments from stakeholders. "Our aim is to come up with a forward looking document that can assist the Government and the public in reflecting on the status of higher education in Hong Kong, the perceived world trends, and hence the strategies for our higher education system," remarked the UGC Chairman.
