Hospital Authority announces fatal case and critical case of human swine influenza

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The Hospital Authority today (October 14) announced a fatal case of human swine influenza (HSI) and a new critical case:

     A 51-year-old male patient with a history of Chronic Obstructive Airway Disease attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Pok Oi Hospital due to shortness of breath on October 11. He was admitted for clinical treatment. The patient became critically ill on October 12 and was transferred to the High Dependency Unit. Positive result for HSI was confirmed on October 12 and he was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics and required ventilation support. The patient's condition continue to deteriorate and he succumbed at 7.50am today.

     The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection. The hospital would like to express its condolences to the deceased's family.

     There is a newly confirmed critical case of human swine influenza in Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital (PYNEH).  A 54-year-old male patient with a history of diabetes mellitus and hypertension was admitted to PYNEH via the Accident and Emergency Department for fever and shortness of breath on October 13. The patient's condition deteriorated and he was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit for further treatment with ventilation support. Positive result for human swine influenza was confirmed on the same day. He was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics. The hospital will continue to closely monitor his condition.
