An array of local vocalists, all pupils of renowned mezzo-soprano Lee Bing, will next month perform in a concert, "Beautiful Blending in Singing", featuring English-language songs and Chinese songs.
The programme consists of duets and a few solos. "The duet, indeed, demonstrates beautiful blending in singing", explained Lee, who is also the concert's music director. "The beautiful blending derives not only from a happy contrapuntal matching of melodic lines but also fine harmony of vocal tone colours as well as complementariness of musical expressions by two or more performers.
"Further, the accompaniment part, whether for the duet or solo song, often by the piano, or perhaps plus another instrument, adds to the beautiful blending of music. Thus duet singing, or solo singing for that matter, with lovely accompaniment by the piano and in some cases by still another instrument, is a fine art, which brings exquisite enjoyment to the audience," she added.
Performing in the concert will be sopranos Rayne Chai, Penelope Chan, Ariel Lam, Joanna Leung, Winnie Tse, Yeung Mei, Priscilla Yu and Alice Yuk; mezzo-sopranos Chan Kin-lai, Fan Fung-hing, Ng Kam-fai, Teresa Tang and Yeung Yim-chu; tenors Chan Hon-keung, Chan Wai-leung, Lee Shou-shoon and Lo Wai-kei; and baritones Lee Pak-leung, Ngan Wan-keung and Joseph Wong.
Lee Bing first received voice training from Jan Hu and Chao Mei-pa, then went to London to further her studies at the Royal Academy of Music, where she graduated with top honours, including the Emma Albani Prize in singing. She was a student of Ruth Packer. An outstanding mezzo-soprano, she has given many solo recitals. She has taught voice at The Chinese University of Hong Kong since 1965.
"Beautiful Blending in Singing" is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. It will be held at 7.30pm, November 10 (Tuesday), at the Theatre, Hong Kong City Hall.
Tickets priced at $100 and $150 are now available at URBTIX outlets. Senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients may have 50% off (limited quotas for students and CSSA recipients on a first-come, first-served basis).
