HA announces fatal case and critical case of human swine influenza

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The Hospital Authority today (October 8) announced a fatal case of human swine influenza and a new critical case:

     A 60-year-old man was admitted to the isolation ward via the Accident and Emergency Department of Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital (AHNH) on October 6 cause of pneumonia. The patient had terminal lung cancer and his condition was serious upon admission, requiring oxygen therapy and antibiotics. His condition deteriorated further and he finally succumbed at 9.58pm that day. Positive result of human swine influenza was confirmed after his death.

     The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection. The hospital would like to express its condolences to the deceased's family.

     There is a newly confirmed critical case of human swine influenza in Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH). A 13-month-old baby boy was admitted to the Infectious Disease Centre via Accident & Emergency Department of PMH on October because of flu symptoms. Positive result of human swine influenza was confirmed on October 2 On the night of October 4, the baby was admitted to Paediatric Intensive Care Unit due to febrile convulsion, and ventilation support was required. The baby's condition continued to deteriorate and he was given Tamiflu and antibiotics for treatment. The hospital will closely monitor his condition.
