HA announces a fatal case and a critical case of human swine influenza

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The Hospital Authority today (October 4) announced a fatal case of human swine influenza and a new critical case:

     A 69-year-old female patient with history of lung cancer, hypertension, Diabetes Mellitus and acute coronary disease developed fever and upper respiratory symptoms and attended the Accident and Emergency Department of Prince of Wales Hospital on October 2. The patient was admitted on the same day for clinical treatment and prescribed with antibiotics. Positive result of human swine influenza was confirmed on October 3. The condition of the patient deteriorated and succumbed at 9.06pm last evening (October 3).

     The case has been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection. The hospital would like to express its condolences to the deceased's family.

     Furthermore, there is a newly confirmed critical case of human swine influenza in Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH). The patient is a 57-year-old female patient with end stage renal failure, Diabetes Mellitus and hypertension. She developed flu symptoms on September 27 and attended the Accident and Emergency Department of TMH on October 3. She was admitted to TMH on the same day and positive result of human swine influenza was confirmed on October 4. The patient was prescribed with Tamiflu, Relenza and antibiotics and is currently on ventilation support. The hospital will closely monitor her condition.
