Police have concluded a territory-wide campaign to remind drivers of public service vehicles (PSV) and goods vehicles of the importance of safe driving.
This was the latest in an ongoing series of campaigns conducted by the Police in 2009 using publicity, education and enforcement to target moving traffic offences.
The campaign, codenamed ¡§Kickstarter¡¨, started on Wednesday (September 16) and ended yesterday (September 29) and resulted in the issue of 59 verbal warnings, 236 summonses and 2576 fixed penalty tickets as well as the arrests of two goods vehicle drivers and six private car drivers for drink driving offences. Of the total number of summonses and fixed penalty tickets issued, 28% per cent were issued for speeding, 15% per cent for mobile phone offences, seven per cent for seat belt offence and four per cent for failing to comply with traffic signals.
Officers from Police Regional Road Safety Teams visited 505 locations throughout the territory and distributed about 22,790 leaflets to drivers of public service vehicles and goods vehicles as well as members of the public. The public were encouraged to report undesirable driving behaviour to the Police or to the Transport Complaints Unit of the Transport Advisory Committee.
¡§The campaign is intended to enhance public awareness of road safety and to reduce traffic accidents¡¨, a Police spokesman said.
