A fatal case of human swine influenza at Yan Chai Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     Yan Chai Hospital (YCH) spokesperson made the following announcement regarding the death of a human swine influenza (HSI) patient today (September 27):

     A 66 year-old male patient with diabetes mellitus, hypertension and angina. He presented mild upper respiratory symptoms on September 21, 2009 and attended the Accident and Emergency Department of YCH on September 22 due to Ischaemic Heart Disease and was admitted for medical treatment. His condition deteriorated and was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit on September 23.  The patient was prescribed with Tamiflu and antibiotics, he required ventilation support and had been in critical condition. Positive result of HSI was confirmed on September 24. His condition was further deteriorated this morning and succumbed at 5.26am today.  

     The case has been reported to Hospital Authority Head Office and Centre for Health Protection. The hospital would like to express its condolences to the patient's family.
