HKO to hold training course on weather observation
**************************************************

The Hong Kong Observatory is inviting people to enrol in a "Weather Observation" training course to be run in November and December.

Appreciating the weather through observation is the first step in formulating an accurate weather forecast. Clouds exhibit themselves in different shapes and appearance under different weather conditions in different seasons. Just by knowing about the clouds, one would have a general comprehension of the current weather.

The training course aims to meet the demands of weather enthusiasts in Hong Kong. It covers basic weather observation techniques and practice such as the classification of clouds, and will be conducted by three experienced Observatory meteorologists.

The course is particularly suitable for those who are fond of outdoor activities. A deeper understanding of the weather will enable them to respond better when their activities are affected by the weather. The course will also cover traditional sayings relating sky conditions to weather changes. As some of them are region-specific, the course will explain the limitations in applying these sayings. Participants will also learn how to make effective use of the weather data available on the Observatory's website. They will be given an opportunity to observe the weather themselves under the guidance of Observatory staff.

Scheduled on the mornings of November 28 and December 12, the course will be conducted in Cantonese at the Hong Kong Observatory Headquarters from 9.30am to 12.30pm. The course fee is $225 per person.  Those interested are invited to check out the details and download the application form on:

The public may also call 1878 200, followed by the keystrokes 7-5-2 after language selection, to obtain the application form (in Chinese) via fax.
