Two organisations to run waste processing centres in EcoPark Phase II
************************************************************

The Environment and Conservation Fund Committee today (September 23) selected two non-profit making organisations to manage and operate short-term waste processing centres in the EcoPark Phase II, Tuen Mun, for about three years.

Yan Oi Tong will run the processing centre for waste plastic while the one for waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) will be operated by St James' Settlement. The waste plastic processing centre will begin operation later this year and the WEEE processing centre will begin early next year.

The committee received five applications for the waste plastic processing centre and three for the WEEE processing centre.  Based on a set of selection criteria including the experience and ability of the non-profit making organisations, their proposals and budget forecasts, it selected the two organisations to manage and operate the centres.

The centres will process community waste plastic and WEEE and turn them into recyclable materials with added values, thus providing a more stable outlet for these materials which lack a market outlet and have been more hard hit by the financial crisis.

The Government also expects to further promote the programme on source separation of waste in residential estates, schools and local districts through the community network of the non-profit making organisations, with a view to further encouraging public participation in recycling of waste plastic and WEEE.
