Hong Kong-based Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra will give three performances, featuring young violinist Agnes Tse and trumpet player Chan Kin-sing, to mark important anniversaries of three composers - Handel, Haydn and Mendelssohn - from German-speaking countries.
The orchestra's music director Dr Yip Wai-hong will give a brief introduction to the great composers. Under the baton of guest conductor Law Po-kwan, the orchestra will play Handel's Overture to "The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba" (from "Solomon") and "Largo" (from "Xerxes"); excerpts from Haydn's "Symphony No. 94 in G, 'Surprise'" and excerpts from "'Toy' Symphony"; and Mendelssohn's "Wedding March" (from "A Midsummer Night's Dream"). Tse will also play Mendelssohn's "Violin Concerto in E Minor, Op. 64, 3rd Movement" and Chan will perform Haydn's "Trumpet Concerto in E-flat, 3rd Movement".
Agnes Tse started playing violin and was a student of Beedarn Chao at the age of five. She passed her ABRSM Grade 8 Violin Certificate at the age of eight and recently obtained her FTCL Violin Recital Diploma from Trinity College. The 12-year-old has performed as a soloist and joined the concert tour of the Hong Kong Children's Symphony Orchestra to Canada and USA this summer.
Chan Kin-sing, 18, began learning the trumpet under Ng King-chuen when he was 10. He came first in "Trumpet: Secondary School – Senior" Class at the Hong Kong Schools Music Festival in 2006. He passed Grade 8 in the ABRSM in the same year. An active player under the influence of his mentor, he joined the Hong Kong Citywinds Ensemble as Principal Trumpet in 2005, and since then has performed with the ensemble on several occasions.
Pan Asia Symphony Orchestra is a highly organised orchestra aiming to promote music among the public, especially the younger generation, in Hong Kong. The orchestra has performed frequently with a number of internationally famous conductors and soloists in Hong Kong over the past 30 years. By using the idioms of popular music and organising concert talks, the orchestra has successfully introduced serious music and Chinese orchestral music to the public, and at the same time, brought about an awareness of the indigenous culture of the people.
Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, "Anniversaries of Handel, Haydn and Mendelssohn Concert" will be held at 8pm, October 23 (Friday), at the Theatre, Ngau Chi Wan Civic Centre; 8pm, October 24 (Saturday), at the Theatre, Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre; and 8pm, October 30 (Friday), at the Theatre, Sheung Wan Civic Centre.
Tickets priced at $100 and $120 are now available at URBTIX outlets. Senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance (CSSA) recipients may have 50% off (limited quotas for CSSA recipients on a first-come, first-served basis).
