SCED visits Tsuen Wan district (with photos)
********************************************

The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mrs Rita Lau, today (September 15) visited Tsuen Wan to get first-hand knowledge of the district's latest developments in areas such as trade and industry, district improvements and social support for residents.

During a visit to a label printing machine manufacturer, she was briefed on the company's operation and business situation, as well as its commitment to research and innovation to build up its own brand name.

"I am pleased to note that this company has marketed its own brand products to over 20 overseas countries, with its customers all expressing confidence in the 'Made in Hong Kong' label. The Government has all along encouraged and supported enterprises developing their own brands and innovative products to enhance their competitiveness," Mrs Lau said.

Mrs Lau also toured Chung On Street, where a street revitalisation project was taking place. Led by some Tsuen Wan district councillors, she visited several shops each with their own characteristics, including a gold ornament shop often patronised by locals and tourists, traditional food stuff shops and a chain store selling Taiwanese drinks. Mrs Lau was interested to learn from the second generation owner of a traditional sauce manufacturing shop that they were injecting modern management style and a quality assurance system into their business.

"I think it is important that all companies, no matter they are selling goods or providing services, should win customers' confidence and build up their brand names by providing quality products or services," she said.

Mrs Lau then visited a school operated by the Lutheran Church, where she was briefed on the school's participation in a pilot scheme under community sponsorship to support new arrival students. The objective of the scheme is to help these students integrate into the school and the community by tackling their learning and other needs.

Before concluding her visit, Mrs Lau had a tea gathering with Tsuen Wan District Council Chairman Chow How-chen and other district councillors during which they exchanged views on a variety of subjects, including how to leverage on Tsuen Wan's harmonious blend between the old and the new to develop the district as a tourist spot.
