Winning entries of Youth Cultural and Arts Competitions to be displayed
***********************************************************

The public can see the winning entries of the 34th Hong Kong Youth Cultural and Arts Competitions at the Exhibition Gallery of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre from tomorrow (September 15) to Thursday (September 17).  Admission is free.

The Assistant Director of Home Affairs, Mr Kesson Lee, will officiate at the opening ceremony at 2.30pm tomorrow. The annual exhibition will feature around 300 winning pieces from various categories of the competitions, including photography, painting, Chinese essay-writing, Chinese story-writing, Chinese calligraphy, slogan and poster design, couplets and Chinese poetry-writing.

Prominent calligraphists and painters will give impromptu demonstrations on the first day of the exhibition and visitors may have the chance to obtain the works as souvenirs. Video clips showing speech contests, folk song singing, classical Chinese poetry and Putonghua recitation competitions will also be shown.

Sponsored by the Home Affairs Department, the competitions have been jointly organised by Hong Kong Youth Cultural and Arts Competitions together with community organisations since 1975.  The competitions aim to promote young people's interest and understanding of the Chinese language, arts and culture, and encourage them to participate in healthy extra-curricular activities. This year's competitions attracted over 20,000 entrants in 19 categories.

The exhibition will be open from 2.30pm to 6pm on September 15 and from 10am to 6pm on September 16-17.

If Typhoon Signal No.8 is hoisted or the Black Rainstorm Signal is issued, the exhibition will be closed and will be re-opened two hours after the cancellation of the signal (if Typhoon Signal No.8 is still hoisted or Black Rainstorm Signal is still issued at 11am on September 15, the exhibition will not open on that day).
