Electric vehicle tested on outlying island (with photos)
********************************************************

The electric vehicle, the i MiEV, is now given a trial on Lamma Island by the Hong Kong Police on its performance and suitability in the rural environment.

The Force is one of the departments examining the electric vehicle under the government trial scheme which aims to promote a wider use of such eco-friendly vehicle.

Using a lithium-ion battery which can be conveniently charged from a normal household electricity supply, the vehicle can save fuel costs by two-thirds. With zero emissions, it can travel around 160 kilometres with a fully charged battery, more than sufficient to cover the daily patrol duties on the island.

In addition, the vehicle enables the officers to go uphill or get through alleys and lanes with ease and promptness which will largely enhance the mobility of the officers and the flexibility in deployment. Officers can pay more frequent visits to local residents, in particular those living in remote villages, to strengthen the liaison with the community. With equipment on board, they can also offer timely and quick assistance to those in need.

A Police spokesman said: "Officers working on Lamma Island are generally satisfied with the performance of the vehicle, regarding it as a great helper for the mobile policing work on the island which are now done by cycling or on foot.

"Personal interaction between police officers and local communities is very important. Our commitment to community policing would be further strengthened by the introduction of the i MiEV."

It is also believed that its green features and quiet operation will be welcomed by local residents who are keen to protect and preserve the clean and picturesque environment.

Subject to successful trials, the Force will consider adopting the use of environmentally friendly electric vehicles in suitable locations.
