Fatal case of community-associated MRSA

     The Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health today (September 10) confirmed a fatal case of community-associated Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (CA-MRSA) infection involving a 73-year-old man.

     The patient developed chest pain, cough and shortness of breath on August 25.  He was admitted to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital on August 30 with pneumonia. His condition deteriorated further and he passed away on September 5.

     The patient's endotrachael aspirate grew CA-MRSA while his nasopharyngeal aspirate was tested positive for influenza A (subtype H3).

     Investigation is ongoing.
