Hong Kong Pure Strings to play Chinese pop and classical music

     Hong Kong Pure Strings, an ensemble of top string musicians from all over the world, will stage a concert next month. Artistic director and violinist Leung Kin-fung, arranger and harpist Joe Lee, violinist Walter Chan Ching-tak, violist Meidad Yehudayan, cellist Artem Konstantinov and double bass player Eddie Zong will play an alternative repertoire of Chinese and Western music.

     The concert will comprise Chinese pop and classical music rearranged by Joe Lee, including "My Pride", "O Sole Mio", "Pearl of the East", "Flight of the Bumble Bee", "Happy Birthday Variation (World Style)", "Endless Love", "The Moon Represents My Heart", "What a Wonderful World" and "Jasmine Tango".

     Founded by Leung Kin-fung and Danny Wong in 2004, Hong Kong Pure Strings aim to use distinctive performances and style to reach beyond musical boundaries. It organised a joint concert with musicians from the Berliner Philharmoniker in 2005 and another two successful joint concerts with musicians from the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra in 2006, playing rearranged classical music and pop music to encourage cultural exchange between the East and the West and fusing the ideas of classical and contemporary music. In 2007, the group released its first CD "Popsinera" to great reviews, and it was named one of "The 10 Hottest CDs of year 2008" and "The Best Light Music Album of year 2008" by the Radio Guangdong's "Voice of the City" on the Mainland.

     Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Hong Kong Pure Strings' "Surprise!" concert will be at 8pm on October 9 (Friday) at the Auditorium, Sha Tin Town Hall. Tickets priced at $100, $150 and $200 are now available at URBTIX outlets. Half-price tickets are available for senior citizens aged 60 or above, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients (limited tickets for CSSA recipients available on a first-come, first-served basis).
