A fatal case of human swine influenza at Tuen Mun Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson of Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) made the following announcement regarding the death of a critical human swine influenza (HSI) patient today (September 3):

     A 55 year-old male patient with a history of nasopharyngeal cancer attended the Accident & Emergency Department of TMH for flu symptoms on August 30 and was admitted to the isolation ward. His condition deteriorated on the same day and he was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit. He was prescribed Tamiflu and antibiotics. The test result for human swine influenza was confirmed positive on August 31. He was in critical condition requiring ventilation support and was prescribed Relenza. His condition continued to deteriorate and he succumbed at 3.47pm today (September 3).

     The case was reported to Hospital Authority Head Office and Centre for Health Protection. TMH will refer the case to Coroner.

     The hospital would like to express its condolences to the patient's family.
