A fatal case of human swine influenza at Yan Chai Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     Yan Chai Hospital (YCH) spokesperson made the following announcement regarding the death of a critical human swine influenza (HSI) patient today (September 2):

     A 59-year-old male patient with chronic disease developed flu symptoms on August 15. The patient attended the Accident & Emergency Department of YCH and was admitted to the isolation room on August 20. The patient received Tamiflu and antibiotics treatment. His condition deteriorated and he was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit on August 21. A positive result for HSI was confirmed on the same day. He was in critical condition requiring ventilation support and receiving Relenza treatment, etc.  His condition continued to deteriorate and he succumbed at 1.57am today (September 2).

     The case was reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and Centre for Health Protection.  The healthcare team has all along been in close communication with the patient's family regarding the patient's condition. The hospital would like to express its sincere condolences to the patient's family.
