The Fight Crime Committee Report No. 28, which gives a detailed account of the committee¡¦s work in 2008, was released today (August 28).
During the year, the committee examined the overall crime situation and the situation of commercial crimes in Hong Kong, monitored the progress of the Police Superintendents¡¦ Discretion Scheme, implemented fight crime publicity work, and oversaw the work of the District Fight Crime Committees as well as the publicity campaign for rehabilitated persons. It also discussed the recommendations of the Task Force on Youth Drug Abuse to tackle the problem of drug abuse among youth, the Law Reform Commission¡¦s consultation paper on interim proposals on the setting up of a sex offender register, and the findings of the third survey on the effectiveness of publicity activities for rehabilitated offenders.
The report sets out the follow-up action taken by relevant government bureaux/departments on the views and suggestions raised at the 2008 Fight Crime Conference on the theme of ¡§United in the Fight Against Crime¡¨. It also gives an account of the work of the two sub-committees under the Fight Crime Committee ¡V the Standing Committee on Young Offenders and the Publicity Sub-Committee, as well as the work of the 18 District Fight Crime Committees.
Chaired by the Chief Secretary for Administration, the Fight Crime Committee comprises seven other senior government officials and eight non-official members. It is tasked to draw up plans to reduce crime, co-ordinate efforts in fighting crime and monitoring the results, and encourage the public to participate in crime prevention efforts.
The report is now available at all the District Offices of the Home Affairs Department. It has also been uploaded onto the Security Bureau¡¦s website (http://www.sb.gov.hk/).
