The Government today (August 21) published a notice in the Gazette on construction of the Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Link. The proposed works aim to provide a new road link to meet the anticipated traffic demand between Northwest New Territories and North Lantau. It will also serve as an alternative access to the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) in addition to the existing North Lantau Highway (NLH).
The proposed works include :
(i) construction of a dual two-lane road tunnel of approximately five kilometres between Tuen Mun and the proposed Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities (HZMB HKBCF) at north-east of HKIA;
(ii) construction of sections of seawalls of approximately 4.2km and Government foreshore and/or sea-bed to be reclaimed to form approximately 35.6 hectares of land for the construction of the proposed Tuen MunˇVChek Lap Kok Link and the associated tunnel portals, buildings, carriageways, footpaths, central reserves/refuge islands and the ancillary works;
(iii) construction of a dual two-lane elevated carriageway of approximately 1.6km across the sea between the proposed HZMB HKBCF and NLH with associated slip roads;
(iv) government foreshore and sea-bed to be affected/reclaimed for the construction of the road tunnel, seawalls and the foundation works of the elevated carriageway;
(v) construction of a toll plaza with associated carriageways at Tuen Mun;
(vi) construction of a footbridge, carriageways, footpaths, cycle tracks, central reserves/refuge islands and amenity areas;
(vii) construction of administration building, ventilation buildings and other ancillary buildings/ facilities to serve the road tunnel and toll plaza;
(viii) modification and realignment of sections of Lung Fu Road and Lung Mun Road at Tuen Mun;
(ix) modification and realignment of sections of NLH and Cheung Tung Road at Lantau;
(x) permanent or temporary closure, demolition, reconstruction and modification of sections of the existing carriageways, footpaths, cycle tracks, amenity areas and central reserves/refuge islands;
(xi) ancillary works including site formation, slope, natural terrain hazard mitigation, drainage, sewerage, water supplies, utilities, and electrical and mechanical works; construction of temporary pontoon; and reprovision of berth and facilities.
The construction work will start in 2010 for completion in 2016.
