Four employers ordered to pay MPF arrears

The following is issued on behalf of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority:

     The Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Authority (MPFA) today (August 19) obtained three orders for payment of outstanding MPF contributions at about $536,000 against three employers in the District Court. Meanwhile, the MPFA pursued a claim in the Small Claims Tribunal for some $23,000 on behalf of two employees, who were owed MPF contributions by their employers.

     The District Court today issued judgments against three employers, namely, Eternal Ethos Limited, Chan Hok Tuen trading as Kwong Kee Seafood Company and Kingsway Corporation Limited. The defendants were ordered to pay the MPFA the sums of $239,124.03, $200,219.25 and $96,664.22 respectively, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable to 50, nine and 21 employees of the defendants.

     Meanwhile, at the Tribunal's hearing today, the defendant Smart Rise Enterprise Limited trading as Sheung Moon Chinese Cuisine did not appear. In its absence, the Adjudicator ordered it to pay the MPFA the sum of $23,104.62, being mandatory contributions in arrears and surcharges payable.

     The amounts awarded at the District Court and the Tribunal will be reimbursed to the employees' MPF accounts as soon as they are received by the MPFA. The District Court ordered the defendants each to pay costs of $930. The Tribunal ordered the defendant to pay $205 as the cost in respect of the claim.
