A Non-isolated patient with HSI postive in PMH was found dead

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

Princess Margaret Hospital(PMH) spokesperson made the following announcement today (1 August 2009)¡G

     A 58- year old male patient with history of chronic heart disease presented with fever, cough and shortness of breath attended our A&E Department on 30 July 09 at around 10:30pm. Preliminary X-ray examination result showed that the patient suffered chest infection. He was admitted to our medical ward for follow up treatment.

     During hospitalization, the patient was in critical condition and put on 100% oxygen. He was given antibiotics treatment and respiratory sample was taken for laboratory test on influenza.

     On 31 July 09 at around 3pm, the patient¡¦s condition deteriorated with cardiac arrest. He was certified dead at 3:54pmon the same day.

     The microbiology laboratory of PMH confirmed the positive result of human swine influenza at around 7pmon 31 July 09 and reported to HA Head Office and Centre for Health Protection. The case has also been referred to Coroner.

     The attending doctor has explained the condition to the patient¡¦s family. Tamiflu was also prescribed to them. We would like to express our condolences to the patient¡¦s family.
