Wind instructors of the Music Office will join about 60 members of the Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band for an afternoon of symphonic band music in the band¡¦s annual concert. Solos of clarinet, oboe, trumpet, percussion, bassoon, euphonium and band music will be featured.
Organised by the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the ¡§Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band Annual Concert¡¨ will be held at 3pm on August 23 (Sunday) at the Auditorium of the Tsuen Wan Town Hall. Conductors of the concert are the Music Office¡¦s instructors Pak Wing-heng, Palas Chan and Yeung Tak-man together with former band member Vicky Shin, who is invited as the guest conductor.
Six wind instructors of the Music Office will perform at the concert as soloists to showcase their technique and the unique characteristics of different wind instruments through various repertoires. Clarinet soloist Desmond Tse and former principal clarinet of the band Jacky Lau will present Mendelssohn¡¦s ¡§Concertpiece No.2¡¨, in which the features of the clarinet are explored to the limit. Trumpet soloist Paul Chiu will perform Curnow¡¦s ¡§Concertpiece¡¨ which demonstrates the brilliant and energetic qualities of the instrument.
Euphonium soloist Lee Sing-wan will showcase the lyrical and technical qualities of euphonium by presenting Sparke¡¦s ¡§Pantomime¡¨. Oboe soloist So Hon-tou will perform Rimsky-Korsakov¡¦s gypsy style ¡§Variations on a Theme of Glinka¡¨. Percussion soloist Li Yan-chong will play Ellerby¡¦s ¡§Canticle of the Sun¡¨ which was based on the canticle written by St. Francis of Assisi and bassoon soloist Au Wai-see will perform Weber¡¦s concerto ¡§Andante and Hungarian Rondo¡¨.
The concert will also feature band music including Fucik¡¦s ¡§Florentiner March¡¨, Tetsunosuke¡¦s ¡§Genroku¡¨, Garland¡¦s ¡§In the Mood¡¨ from the ¡§Swing Girls¡¨ and Dello Joio¡¦s ¡§Scenes from The Louvre¡¨.
The Hong Kong Youth Symphonic Band was formed in 1978. Over the years, it had nurtured several generations of young musicians and created a wider public interest in band music in Hong Kong. The band currently has about 60 members aged from 12 to 22.
The band has performed with a number of distinguished guest musicians and bands including the Central Band of the Royal Air Force, the Tanunda Band of Australia, the Regimental Band of the Green Jackets and the Scots Guards. It has embarked on a number of highly successful concert tours to Hawaii, Australia and Korea, and was also invited by the Kagoshima Perfectural Government of Japan to go on a concert tour for cultural exchange last year.
Tickets priced at $80, $60 and $40 for the annual concert are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half-price concessions are available for full-time students, senior citizens, people with disabilities and Comprehensive Social Security Assistance recipients.
