Journey to "China's exotic west" with Loo Sze-wang and local orchestra
************************************************************

Promising sheng player Loo Sze-wang will join the Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra to perform in a concert titled "China's Exotic West".

The concert, featuring music from western China, will be held at 8pm, Sunday, August 30, at the Auditorium of Kwai Tsing Theatre. Under the batons of Chan Chiu-yin and Alfred Wong, Loo will play "Mountain Village" and "The Joyful Song of Axi", and perform with the orchestra "Tianshan Mountain Rhapsody" and "King Qin's Music for Defeating the Enemy". The orchestra will also perform "Wine Song of Yi Tribe", "Banquet at the Sichuan Court", "Somewhere Far Away" and "Ancient Capital".

A graduate of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, Loo Sze-wang is one of the foremost sheng (Chinese mouth-organ) players of his generation in Hong Kong. Active both as a soloist and as a chamber musician, Loo has performed in various countries and cities, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, the United States, Japan, Taiwan, Germany, Singapore, Korea and China.

A founding member of the Chinese Music Virtuosi, Loo and the ensemble have performed in many international music festivals. The ensemble has also commissioned over a dozen new works, including works that score for both Chinese and Western instruments.

Founded in 1962, the Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra is one of the oldest Chinese orchestras in Hong Kong. The orchestra has organised regular performances to introduce different styles of Chinese folk music to the public and to provide training and performing opportunities to local young musicians, many of whom have won prizes at various music competitions. In recent years, the orchestra has collaborated with an array of music virtuosos to great acclaim from audiences and critics alike.
