SEN visits Yuen Long (with photos)

     The Secretary for the Environment, Mr Edward Yau, today (July 29) visited Yuen Long to see the progress of environmental protection measures in the district and listen to views of local residents.

     In Nam Sang Wai, Mr Yau was briefed on the landfilling activities there and learnt that the Environmental Protection Department and other relevant departments had taken steps to tackle the problem.  He stressed that the Government attached great importance to protecting farmlands and called on the local community to work together to preserve a greener environment for the residents.

     He then inspected the sewerage programme for Yuen Long and Kam Tin. He was pleased to note that the project reduced the quantity of untreated sewage discharged into Yuen Long Nullah. As a result, the water quality of the nullah and sanitary condition of surrounding area were improved substantially.

     Mr Yau took the opportunity to tour Yuen Long Town Hall where he met the Chairman of Yuen Long Town Hall Management Committee, Mr Chiu Kit-tsee.  They discussed the benefits brought to the residents by the environmental protection initiatives and services undertaken by Yuen Long Town Hall.  Mr Yau said active community participation was of great importance in making environmental protection a success.

     Before concluding his visit, Mr Yau met Yuen Long District Council members and sought their views on environmental protection and local affairs.
