More than 500 jobs to promote the safe and healthy use of the Internet were opened for applications today (July 29) at a recruitment expo for the "Be NetWise" Internet education campaign.

The "Be NetWise" campaign is a one-year education programme to promote awareness and raise the knowledge and technical know-how of students in primary and junior secondary schools, as well as their parents and teachers, on the safe and healthy use of the Internet.

Under the campaign, more than 500 Internet Ambassadors, leaders and programme officers will be employed to help promote the campaign through their involvement in various district and school activities. A two-day recruitment expo was held today to open the job opportunities to the public.

Addressing the opening ceremony of the expo, the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mrs Rita Lau, said, "For those who are offered employment at the expo, what they get is not only a job for one year, but also practical training while taking part in such a meaningful campaign and contributing to the healthy eLife of young people in Hong Kong.

"It is the mission of those successful candidates to guide parents and students in Hong Kong on how to become 'NetWise', and help them give full play to their potential on the Internet, to help Hong Kong to be a knowledge-based economy, and a digitally inclusive and healthy society," she said.

The Government has allocated $63 million to launch the "Be NetWise" campaign to promote the safe and healthy use of Internet. It will cover issues such as respect for personal data privacy and intellectual property rights, avoidance of Internet addiction, and protection against computer virus attack.

The Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups and 13 other youth-related non-government organisations have joined the campaign, which is also supported by the Hong Kong Council of Social Service. The campaign will officially be launched in September and will cover a series of territory-wide as well as district-level activities, including large-scale promotions, roving exhibitions, training courses, school talks and inter-school activities, and provide enquiry hotline services and home visit technical support, in the coming year.
