Eastern District Summer Youth Programme starts (with photos)
************************************************************

"Eastern District Summer Fiesta" was held at the Sunbeam Theatre today (July 25), to mark the start of the 2009 Eastern District Summer Youth Programme.

Officiating guests included Eastern District Officer Mr Herman Cho, Eastern District Council Vice-Chairman Mr Christopher Chung, 2009 Eastern District Summer Youth Programme Co-ordinating Committee Chairman Mr Yeung Wai-hong.

To tie in with the 2009 Summer Youth Programme slogan "Be Confident + Be Positive, Be an Achiever", Mr Cho invited youngsters and their parents to make the best use of the summer holidays to widen their horizons and build confidence.

He said, "This year's programme provides opportunities for teenagers and parents to further develop their strengths and talents. These activities will enable youngsters to show their vitality and help minimise their chance of being lured into drugs. Let's say 'no' to drugs together!"

"In support of Hong Kong's hosting of the 2009 East Asian Games, sports elements have been added to these summer activities. Through these activities, youngsters can learn from athletes' tough training process and unshakeable spirit which help encourage them to cultivate positive values and get rid of drug abuse."

The 2009 Eastern District Summer Youth Programme Co-ordinating Committee will hold more than 260 summer activities this year. The committee encourages district groups to organise more activities for the disadvantaged and teenagers with special needs, to lower the chance of teenagers' getting into contacts with drugs, and to promote social harmony in the district.
