Five Secondary Six students representing Hong Kong at the 40th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) in Mexico, have achieved the best results since Hong Kong students began participating in the Olympiad in 2004.

The record haul in this Olympiad was a gold, two silver and two bronze medals.

Gold medallist Yu Lik-hang of S.K.H. Lam Woo Memorial Secondary School, had previously been awarded first prize in the Pan-Pearl River Delta Physics Olympiad in February and achieved the highest score among the HK team members in that competition.

The silver medallists are Sing Yin Secondary School's Jeffrey Poon Ting-fung, and Lam Kin. The two bronze medallists are Yeung Wing-ki of S.T.F.A. Leung Kau Kui College and Lee Tak-yan of S.K.H. Lam Woo Memorial Secondary School.

The excellent results this year marked the success of co-operation among the Education Bureau, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education (HKAGE) in providing training and support for gifted students.

The students are trainees of the Physics Enhancement Programme under the Support Measures for the Exceptionally Gifted Students Scheme.

The delegation will return to Hong Kong later today (July 22). The IPhO this year was held from July 11-19 in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico, with more than 400 contestants from about 96 countries/regions participating. The event is to promote education in physics, strengthen interaction and co-operation among experts in physics worldwide and to train and inspire teenagers with enormous potential in physics.

Leader of the Hong Kong Team was Prof Chen Tian-wen of HKUST. Mr Godwin Szeto Chung-wang, Physics teacher of St Joseph College, was deputy leader.

Information on the competition is available on the website of the Support Measures for the Exceptionally Gifted Students Scheme on (http://gifted.hkedcity.net/) and the HKAGE website: (www.hkage.org.hk).
