Summer safe cycling campaign starts tomorrow
********************************************

Police will run a territory-wide safe cycling campaign from tomorrow (July 20) to August 2 to promote safe cycling in the summertime.

Police officers will distribute publicity leaflets from July 20 to 26 in areas frequented by cyclists, in particular cycling tracks.  Cyclists will be reminded of the proper use of cycling tracks and that they should observe road safety.  Motorists will also be reminded to pay attention to cyclists on the road.

During the first week of the campaign, cyclists who commit minor offence will be given verbal warnings.  Stringent enforcement action will be taken against offenders from July 27 to August 2.

A Police spokesman said, ˇ§Cyclists are subject to the Road Traffic Ordinance which applies to motorists once on the road.  They should also be conscious of other road users.ˇ¨

Common cycling offences include carrying another person, carrying animal or article which obstructs the cyclistˇ¦s view, riding a bicycle on the pavement, and riding without illuminating necessary lights.

Police figures show that there were 798 traffic accidents involving bicycles, resulting in 699 cyclist casualties during the first six months in 2009.  The figures represent an increase of 7.1 per cent and 3.1 per cent respectively when compared with the same period in 2008.  Among these casualties five died, an increase of two deaths when compared with the same period in 2008.
