The Central & Western District Office and Central & Western Council today (July 18) jointly launched the Community Cleaning Day to help prevent the spread of human swine flu and tie in with the Clean Hong Kong Campaign.
Volunteers from ZJ Association, The Volunteers, Friends of Mount Davis, Hong Kong Society of Juvenile and Youth, Hong Kong Central & Western District Women Association and Tsung Tsin Mission of Hong Kong Kau Yan Church, and the cleaning contractor of the Central & Western District Office, will help clean the common areas of about 20 old buildings in the district which are 30 or more years old and without any form of management body. Several refuse collection points in the district were especially opened for residents during the cleaning day, for their convenient disposal of large-sized garbage.
The Central & Western District Officer, Mrs Winnie Ho; Central & Western District Council Chairman, Mr Chan Tak-chor; District Environmental Hygiene Superintendent (Central/Western), Mr Fan Yung-kai, and a number of councillors including District Council Vice Chairman Mr Stephen Chan, Mr Chan Hok-fung, Ms Cheng Lai-king, Mr Sidney Lee, Mr. Man Chi-wah and Mr Nelson Wong joined the volunteers to inspect the Sai Ying Pun Market and distribute disinfectant packs to citizens. After the inspection, they went to several old buildings to show their support for the cleaning action.
Mrs Ho said, "Establishing a clean community and preventing the spread of viruses depends on the continued and concerted efforts of all residents. The Central & Western District Office and Central & Western Council hope to promote anti-flu messages through the Community Cleaning Day and appeal to residents to pay more attention to hygiene."
Mr Chan said that the District Council would continue to work closely with the District Office and other relevant departments in inspecting hygiene blackspots and promoting anti-flu messages to build a clean community.
