Festival invitation for lantern designers

     Entries are now invited from the public for the Mid-Autumn Lantern Design Competition 2009.

     The competition is jointly organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Education Bureau to promote the handicraft of lantern-making and to arouse public interest in traditional Chinese arts.

     The competition comprises three divisions: Primary School; Secondary School and Open Division for tertiary students and amateurs. Primary and secondary students should submit entry forms through their schools.

     Entries are now being accepted for the Open Division. Interested people should send their entry form to LCSD's Entertainment Office, 9/F, Queen Elizabeth Stadium, 18 Oi Kwan Road, Wan Chai, or by fax to 2575 0864 by July 17.

     Participants may enter as an individual or as a group of no more than four people. Each participant may submit only one entry including group work. The same lantern cannot be submitted in more than one division.

     All handmade lanterns with completed official labels should be submitted to the Exhibition Hall, 1/F, Low Block, Hong Kong City Hall, 5 Edinburgh Place, Central between September 21-23 from 10am to 8pm.

     The panel of judges will be made up of arts educationists and arts administrators. The first three winners of each division will be awarded book coupons worth $1,800, $1,500 and $1,200 respectively, and entries judged to be outstanding will be awarded book coupons of $400. Three grand prizes will also be awarded to those with distinguished designs: Lantern of the Best Visual Effect, Lantern of the Best Infectiousness and Lantern with the Most Creative Design, and each winner will receive a book coupon of $500. All winners will also be awarded certificates of merit and other prizes.

     All lanterns will be displayed at the Exhibition Hall, 1/F, Low Block, Hong Kong City Hall from September 26 to October 3.

     Entry forms for the Open Division are available at the department's major cultural venues and all public libraries, or can be downloaded from the website, www.lcsd.gov.hk/eo .
