Contractor fined for violation of safety rules
**********************************************

A contractor was fined $26,000 at Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Court today (July 9) for violation of the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations and the Factories and Industrial Undertakings (Electricity) Regulations.  The prosecution was launched by the Labour Department.

The case involved a fatal accident on July 19 last year at a construction site in Discovery Bay when a worker was electrocuted.

According to Regulation 47(1) of the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations, contractors must take measures to prevent workmen from being endangered by live electric cables.  Any contractor who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $200,000.

According to Regulation 6 of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings (Electricity) Regulations, all live conductors should be insulated and further effectively protected where necessary to prevent electrical hazard so far as is reasonably practicable.  Any contractor who fails to do so is liable to a fine of $50,000.
