Potters invited to tea ware competition
***************************************

Ceramic artists and students are invited to an open competition of tea ware organised by the Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware.

The "2010 Tea Ware by Hong Kong Potters" competition is to enhance ceramic art and foster tea drinking culture in Hong Kong. Works submitted should be functional as well as creative and can be in form of teapot, teacup, cup stand, saucer, slop bowl, water boiler, ewer, tea caddy, fresh water jar, etc. They can be designed and made for brewing and preparation of different types of tea. The selected artworks will be showcased at the "2010 Tea Ware by Hong Kong Potters" exhibition at the Museum of Tea Ware in July 2010.

To encourage more students to engage in ceramic art and to stimulate their creativity, a School Category has been added to the competition this year for the first time. It is expected that through the competition, the interest of students and their application of technical skills in ceramics will be enhanced under the instruction of teachers, and more young potential potters will be nurtured. The entrants to the School Category should be full-time Hong Kong students aged 18 or below with submissions through a local registered school. The competition also offers an Open Category for participation of artists residing in Hong Kong and in possession of a Hong Kong identity card. Entrants to both categories should submit their entries in their personal capacity.

Submitted works should be original ceramic creations hand-made by the entrants not more than two years from the date of entry. Submitted works should not have been awarded previously by any institution or organisation, nor donated or sold to any person, company, institution or organisation. Each entrant to the Open Category may submit a maximum of five entries, and a maximum of 10 entries from each school under the School Category. Each entry can be a single item or a set.

Judging criteria will include originality, creativity, technical competence and functionality. For the Open Category, cash prizes of $16,000, $12,000 and $10,000 will be awarded respectively to the winners of the first, second and third places and $2,000 each will go to other winners as a Prize of Excellence. For the Student Category, cash prizes of $8,000, $6,000 and $4,000 will be awarded respectively to the winners of the first, second and third places. Certificates will also be presented to the award winners and entrants whose works are selected for the exhibition.

Entry forms and brochures will be available at the Hong Kong Museum of Art, the Museum of Tea Ware and the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre in mid July and can be downloaded from the Museum of Art's website (http://hk.art.museum/) starting from July 1. Entries should be submitted, along with the completed entry forms and labels, to the designated places between the appointed dates and times.

For the Open Category, all entries must be submitted on November 28 or November 29 between 10.30am and 4.45pm to the Museum of Tea Ware, 10 Cotton Tree Drive, Central, Hong Kong.

For the School Category, all entries must be submitted on November 26 or November 27 between 10.30am to 4.45pm to the Visual Arts Centre, 7A Kennedy Road, Central, Hong Kong.
