Events Calendar for HK 2009 EAG supporting programmes available (with photos)

     A colourful Events Calendar publicizing more than 350 Hong Kong 2009 East Asian Games (EAG) supporting programmes will be available for public collection from tomorrow (June 29).

     Announcing the launching of the Events Calendar for the Hong Kong 2009 East Asian Games Supporting Programmes at the opening ceremony of the 2009 Olympic Day Run this morning (June 28), the Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs, Mrs Carrie Yau, called on members of the public to participate actively in these events so as to show their support to the EAG.

     Mrs Yau said that in order to encourage public participation and to create a festive atmosphere in the community for the EAG, the calendar was produced to promote the more than 350 community and sports programmes to be held in the second half of 2009.

     Decorated with EAG mascots "Dony" and "Ami" for the 23 competition events, the calendar shows the dates and venues of individual sport competitions of the EAG. It also lists out a wide variety of events to be held between July and December in support of the EAG. These activities include sports events, carnivals, exhibitions, seminars, and cultural presentations, to be staged by the Home Affairs Department (HAD), Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), EAG (Hong Kong) Ltd, Sports Federation and Olympic Committee, Hong Kong, China (SF & OC), national sports associations, District Councils and various district and sports bodies.

     To facilitate the public in choosing and joining the supporting events, the calendar provides details of each event, including the date, time, venue, organiser, enquiry telephone number and web link.

Among these activities, the highlights are:

- the Promotion of Hong Kong Athletes' Readiness in Participating in the 5th EAG ¡V Sports Talks cum Sports Demonstration and Participation. It is organised by the SF & OC and will be held at the Hong Kong International Trade and Exhibition Centre, Kowloon Bay from July 6 to July 9;

- the Fitness for All in support of EAG organised by the LCSD throughout the 18 districts on August 8. It is a highlight programme to further promote the EAG Exercise that has been launched since June 1 at various LCSD¡¦s venues.  It is also a programme organized in support of the country¡¦s National Fitness Day;

- the torch relay on August 29 to celebrate the 100-day countdown to the EAG organised by the EAG (Hong Kong) Ltd and LCSD;

- the opening and closing ceremonies of the EAG on December 5 and 13 respectively.

     Members of the public may collect the Events Calendar at the District Leisure Offices and venues of the LCSD as well as the District Offices from tomorrow.

     The Event Calendar is also uploaded onto the websites of the LCSD <www.lcsd.gov.hk> and Hong Kong 2009 EAG <www.2009eastasiangames.hk>.

     The 2009 East Asian Games will be held in Hong Kong from December 5 to 13. It is the first large-scale multi-sports international event ever held in Hong Kong. More than 3,000 athletes from nine East Asian countries/regions will vie for 281 gold medals in 23 sports. Both the number of sports and medals are the largest in the history of EAG.
